Cleveland, Ohio passed a CEASEFIRE resolution on March 25, 2024

Resolution No. 366-2024 - AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION Condemning all forms of hate and discrimination in this City and around the world, and supporting the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a halt to the fighting in Gaza.

WHEREAS, this Council condemns violence of any kind and all forms of hate including racism, Islamophobia, and antisemitism; and insists that all people have the right to learn, work, worship, and live free from intimidation, harassment and fear of violence; and

WHEREAS, this Council has heard from countless constituents in this City across diverse communities who are calling for peace, whose loved ones have been killed or injured in the worsening conflict, whose families are experiencing famine and devastation, and who have been personally threatened and fear violence; and

WHEREAS, this Council condemns the attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, that lead to the loss of Israeli and American lives and the taking of hundreds of hostages; and

WHEREAS, this Council and Clevelanders of all faiths and backgrounds have expressed profound concern for the innocent civilians suffering and are alarmed by the loss of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian and American lives due to the war in Gaza; further this Council calls for international aid to go immediately and directly to the people of Gaza; and

WHEREAS, this Council supports all efforts to resolve the tragic conflict in Gaza and further supports the Resolution adopted by the UN Security Council that calls for a halt to the fighting in Gaza and for the release of all hostages taken captive on October 7th; and

WHEREAS, this resolution constitutes an emergency measure for the immediate preservation of public peace, property, health or safety, now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CLEVELAND:

Section 1. That this Council condemns all forms of hate and discrimination in this City and around the world, and supports the United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a halt to the fighting in Gaza.

Section 2. That the Clerk of Council is directed to send copies of this resolution to Senator Sherrod Brown, Senator JD Vance and Representative Shontel Brown.

Section 3. That this resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure and, provided it receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to Council, it shall take effect and be in force immediately upon its adoption and approval by the Mayor; otherwise it shall take effect and be in force from and after the earliest period allowed by law.
